"Purpose: In issuing this manual, Brass and Bronze Ingot Institute sincerely desires to assist those interested in non-ferrous foundry alloys to utilize quality Copper Base Alloys in Ingot Form with maximum economy and efficiency." Das Ingot Institute war in den Vereinigten Staaten eine maßgebliche Adresse. Es war der Industrie und Fachverband, der die Hersteller von Messing und Bronze Gusslegierungen vertrat. Das Institut war in den 1940er bis 1960er Jahren besonders aktiv und erfüllte drei zentrale Funktionen: 1. Technische Standardisierung. Das BBII entwickelte verbandseigene Legierungsstandards, bevor ASTM Normen (American Society for Testing and Materials) vollständig etabliert waren. Dazu gehörten: einheitliche Legierungsbezeichnungen, chemische Zusammensetzungen, mechanische Mindestwerte, Gießereieignung, Qualitätsrichtlinien. 2. Praxisorientierte Gießereifachinformationen. Das Institut war dabei extrem praxisnah. Die Sektionen Foundry Practice und Foundry Defects zeigen: konkrete Schmelz- und Gießanweisungen, typische Fehlerbilder, Ursachenanalyse, Abhilfemaßnahmen. Dies war Werkstattwissen, das die US Industrie produktiver und standardisierter machen sollte. 3. Branchenorganisation und Marktbeobachtung. Das BBII war schließlich auch ein Lobby und Informationsverband: es lieferte Marktberichte, berichtete über Recycling- und Schrottqualitäten, Rohstofffragen (Kupfer, Zink, Zinn), den Austausch zwischen Gießereien und Halbzeugherstellern. Weltkrieg und kalter Krieg sorgten hier für einen Wandel: an die Stelle der inoffiziellen' verbandlichen Standardisierungen traten die Normierungsvorgaben einer gemeinnützigen Non Profit Organisation: der American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). In dem vorliegenden Band kam das Ingot Institute seiner ersten Aufgabe nach: in sechs Sektionen' lieferte es ein geschlossenes technisches Kompendium, das die Standards der gesamten Prozesskette der Messing und Bronzeherstellung abbildete. Für den Technik- und Industriehistorischer: seine sechs Sektionen sind von heute gesehen ein komplettes technisches Referenzwerk der US Kupferlegierungsindustrie im Jahr 1956.
