William Cobbett (1763 - 1835) was an English radical pamphleteer, journalist, politician, and farmer. He advocated for the poor and working class. In 1822 he embarked on a series of journeys by horseback through the countryside of Southeast England and the English Midlands. He wrote down what he saw from the points of view both of an agriculturist and a social reformer. He published his observations in serial form in the radical 'Political Register', the newspaper which he founded. Joe McLaren [Illus.] (illustrator).
