A group of three rare course catalogs from the Instituto Allende, documenting the late 1950s to early 1960s, when the school became one of Mexico's leading centers for international art education. The original art school was founded in 1938 by Stirling Dickinson, who helped organize its first summer session. In January 1951, it was reorganized as the Instituto Allende, incorporated into the Universidad de Guanajuato, and housed in the restored 18th-century palace of the Counts of La Canal. Under the presidency of Enrique Fernandez Martinez (former governor of Guanajuato), the Instituto quickly gained prestige as a cultural and educational center attracting hundreds of American and Canadian students. The catalogs include descriptions of courses, faculty, and programs in painting, sculpture, woodcarving, ceramics, metal work, lithography, weaving, textile design, photography, Spanish language, and Mexican history, as well as tuition fees, accommodations, extracurricular activities, and transportation. Notable faculty listed include Stirling Dickinson (Director), James Pinto, Simon Ybarra, John Baldwin, Fred Samuelson, Kent Bowman, Ruby Martin, Brita Sundholm, and Dr. Francisco Olsina. One catalog also details the Writing Center under James Norman, offering creative writing, journalism, and television writing workshops.
