Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First American Edition ( 'First published 1995 by Cornell University Press' ). Beautiful looking book. You can see the red covers in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. The black lettering on the spine is nicely bright. There are only tiny crinkles at the spine ends. The cover edges are in excellent shape, no rubbing. The corners have only speck-sized spots of superficial rubbing. The page edges are free of soiling. The book is very solidly bound with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The gray inside covers and end papers are free of wear. The rear side of the rear end paper has one little spot. The pages are exceptionally clean and bright. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. I'm not finding any conspicuous creasing, no placeholder creases, no turned-down corners. There is a tiny nick on one page, no tears. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. There are a large number of photographs along with several drawings. Actually I can be more specific: there are 38 illustrations. All are in excellent condition. (Humorously, the List of Illustrations identifies 38, but the verbiage on the front flap of the dust jacket references 39. Whatever the true number, all are present). You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It's in very nice shape, very clean. The only wear I see is quite minor, a little crinkling at the spine ends. The flaps are in excellent shape, very clean, no tears, no wear to speak of. The jacket is not priced or clipped. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the jacket: 'Aby M. Warburg (1866-1929) is recognized not only as one of the century's preeminent art and Renaissance historians but also as a founder of twentieth-century methods in iconology and cultural studies in general. Warburg's 1923 lecture, first published in German in 1988 and now available in the first complete English translation, offers at once a window on his career, a formative statement of his cultural history of modernity, and a document in the ethnography of the American Southwest. This edition includes thirty-nine photographs many of them originally presented as slides with the speech, and a rich interpretive essay by the translator. The presentation grow out of Warburg's 1985 encounter with Hopi Indians, an experience he claimed generated his theory of the Renaissance. In this powerfully written piece, Warburg investigates the relationships among ethnography, iconography, and cultural studies to develop a multicultural history of modernity.'.
