Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First. Binding is green cloth with gilt lettering on spine; mild bumps to corners and slight speckling to page edges. Dj is lightly soiled, with some wear to its top edge and short tears to either side of top of spine; price-clipped. Now protected inside a cover.… In this volume the author has brought together a wide selection of prose and verse pieces from various centuries to illustrate the lives of the people in the counties round London. Extracts giving the background of English scenery - forest, downland and river - lead naturally to a study of the churches and palaces, homes and gardens they have made and of the agriculture, markets and fairs by which they have earned their livelihood. Their social life and wide sporting interests are amply described. More intimately, their songs and customs are given, along with the history that surrounds their great and humble folk - even to their simple and humorous epitaphs. Throughout the volume the background of country town and village is amply sketched to delight the lover of topography. Includes black and white photographs. Book.

Hardcover. Condition: As new. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First thus. It's not easy to find a full four-volume set of this Folio Society title, in the first printing of the first edition, in this as-new condition, at least in the U.S. The second printing, which was produced at a German, rather than British, printer and on diffe…rent paper, than the first? Maybe. Individual volumes? Readily available. But all four volumes of "Notable Historical Trials" in all their quarter-bound, gorgeous combed-marble, slip-cased glory, in such condition that they probably have never been read? Challenging. Editor Justin Lovill said in the note that begins each volume that his purpose was to "create a collection of classic accounts of notable historical trials designed for the general reader"-this isn't a collection of legal briefs for lawyers, in other words. Lovill does include actual trial testimony when he can, however, and other legal documents such as confessions. His note also states that his preference was to draw on accounts contemporaneous to the trials themselves, and directly related to the trials, whenever possible, though he also used his judgement as to the reliability and readability (for modern readers) of those accounts. Lovill covers 41 cases in chronological order across the four volumes, dating from the trial of Socrates in 399 BCE to the trial of Oscar Wilde in 1895. Lovill is British and The Folio Society is based in London, so it may be no wonder that his selection tends to be Anglocentric, just as it tends towards trials with great historical significance that should be familiar to most readers in the UK and the US. But that is not always the case. As an example, tucked between the trial of Galileo and that of King Charles I in Volume II is the trial of a French village priest, Urban Grandier, who was convicted of witchcraft in 1634 and burned at the stake. The volumes are amply illustrated. Almost all of the illustrations are reproductions of artwork from the time of the trials themselves, often formal portraits of the characters involved and sometimes reproductions from relevant documents. But as time went on, ink woodcuts and engravings were widely produced for popular consumption. Trials such as these were terrific fodder for such mass media. When the original artwork appeared in color, it is reproduced in color in this collection; when it originally appeared in black and white, so it appears here. The whole thing kicks off with an introduction in the first volume by John Mortimore, barrister, but most famous as the creator of the great "Rumpole of the Bailey," who meditates on what trials are really for and whether they achieve justice, concluding with, "So, reading these trials is as good a way as any of understanding history." He has a point. All four of these volumes are quarter-bound, with dark red cloth spines and combed marbled boards. Each volume has title of the set stamped in gold within a square black integrated label on the spine, framed by gold stamped lines at the top and bottom. A similar black and gold label of the Folio Society logo is at the bottom of the spine. The volume title is stamped in gold on the red spine below the top label: I Socrates to the Gunpowder Plot; II Galileo to Admiral Byng; III Boston Massacre to Queen Caroline; IV Burke & Hare to Oscar Wilde. There are no flaws on any of the bindings; all are tight and square. The books were issued without dust jackets but came together in a single slip case, covered in black paper, with the names of most of the trials stamped in gold on the sides. The case is in fine structural shape; a touch of rubbing on the bottom. There are no marks, creases, or tears to the text block; no pages loose or missing. A russet-colored print of Lady Justice appears on the free end paper of the front and back of each volume. Photos are forthcoming or available upon request.
