Boards (HB) in very good condition with slight soiling to page edges. owner name and address inside top cover and small brown spot on very tip of about 2 dozen pages. Dust jacket in good condition with chips, small enclosed tears and price clipped. The novel…tells the story of a highly dysfunctional family, the Pollits. The naïve egoism of the eponymous Sam Pollit overwhelms his family, especially his wife Henny and eldest daughter Louie. The family is not wealthy, a situation exacerbated by Sam's idealism, Henny's accumulated debts, and the terrible rift between the couple. Stead details the parents' marital battles and the various accounts of the blended family's affections and alliances. It was not until a reissue edition in 1965, with an introduction by poet Randall Jarrell, that it found widespread critical acclaim and popularity.527 pages.

Jarrell died in 1965 at the age of 51, yet he created a body of work that secured his position as one of the century's leading American men of letters. Although he saw himself chiefly as a poet, publishing a number of books of poetry, he also left behind a comic novel, four ch…ildren's books, numerous translations, letters and four collections of essays. Edited by Brad Leithauser. Draws from these four essay collections, reminding us that Jarell the poet was also, in the words of Robert Lowell, 'a critic of genius.'.
