Hardcover. Condition: Good. Right up until his death in 2008, John Leonard was a lion in American letters. Reading for My Life is a monumental collection of Leonardâs most significant writings â" spanning five decades â" from his earliest columns for the Harvard Crimson to his final essays for the New York Review of Books. Here are Leonardâs best writings â" many never before published in book form â" on the cultural touchstones of a generation, each piece a testament to his sharp wit, fierce intelligence, and lasting love of the arts. Definitive reviews of Doris Lessing, Vladimir Nabokov, Tom Wolfe, Don DeLillo, Milan Kundera, and Philip Roth among others, display his nearly encyclopedic knowledge of literature in the second half of the twentieth century. His essay on Ed Sullivan and the evolution of television remains a classic. Through Leonardâs reviews and essays is a dedicated political spirit, pleading for social justice, advocating for the womenâs movement, and forever calling attention to writers whose work challenged and excited him. Includes remembrances by Leonardâs friends, family, and colleagues. 384p.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. NEW First Everyman's Library Edition (Orig. 2006) Printing Unstated * ABOUT THE BOOK: Seven books in one hardcover volume from the bestselling, award-winning author of "The Year of Magical Thinking", including the full texts of: "Slouching Towards Bethlehem", "The White Album", "Salvador", "Miami", "After Henry", "Political Fictions" & "Where I Was From". Joan Didion's incomparable & distinctive essays & journalism are admired for their acute, incisive observations & their spare, elegant style. The 7 books of nonfiction that appeared between 1968 & 2003 are here collected into one thrilling collection. "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" captures the counterculture of the sixties, its mood & lifestyle, as symbolized by California, Joan Baez, Haight-Ashbury. "The White Album" covers the revolutionary politics & the "contemporary wasteland" of the late 60s and early 70s, in pieces on the Manson family, the Black Panthers, & Hollywood. "Salvador" is a riveting look at the social & political landscape of civil war. Miami exposes the secret role this largely Latin city played in the Cold War, from the Bay of Pigs through Watergate. In "After Henry" Didion reports on the Reagans, Patty Hearst, & the Central Park jogger case. The eight essays in "Political Fictions"?on censorship in the media, Gingrich, Clinton, Starr, & "compassionate conservatism," among others?show us how we got to the political scene of today. And in "Where I Was From" Didion shows that California was never the land of the golden dream. * ABOUT EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY: EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY pursues the highest production standards, printing on acid-free cream-colored paper, w/ full-cloth cases w/ 2-color foil stamping, decorative end-papers, silk ribbon markers, European-style half-round spines, & a full-color illustrated jacket. Contemporary Classics include an introduction, a select bibliography, and a chronology of the author's life and times. * ABOUT THE AUTHOR: JOAN DIDION was born in Sacramento in 1934 & graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1956. After graduation, Didion moved to New York & began working for Vogue, which led to her career as a journalist & writer. Didion published her first novel, "Run River", in 1963. Didion's other novels include "A Book of Common Prayer" (1977), "Democracy" (1984), & "The Last Thing He Wanted" (1996). Didion's first volume of essays, "Slouching Towards Bethlehem", was published in 1968, and her second, "The White Album", was published in 1979. Her nonfiction works include "Salvador" (1983), "Miami" (1987), "After Henry" (1992), "Political Fictions" (2001), "Where I Was From" (2003), "We Tell Ourselves Stories in Order to Live" (2006), "Blue Nights" (2011), "South and West" (2017) & "Let Me Tell You What I Mean" (2021). Her memoir "The Year of Magical Thinking" won the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 2005. In 2005, Didion was awarded the American Academy of Arts & Letters Gold Medal in Criticism & Belles Letters. In 2007, she was awarded the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. A portion of National Book Foundation citation read: "An incisive observer of American politics and culture for more than 45 years, Didion's distinctive blend of spare, elegant prose & fierce intelligence has earned her books a place in the canon of American literature as well as the admiration of generations of writers & journalists." In 2013, she was awarded a National Medal of Arts & Humanities by President Barack Obama, & the PEN Center USA's Lifetime Achievement Award. Didion said of her writing: "I write entirely to find out what I'm thinking, what I'm looking at, what I see and what it means." She died in December 2021. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL (or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost charge) & via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL to all international destinations.

Add to basketOriginal Dark Blue Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Reprint. 1954. Reprint in two volumes (the first edition was in 1927). xvi, 402pp.; vi, 366pp. Eusebius of Caesarea (c.260/265-339) was a historian of Christianity, exegete, and Christian polemicist from the Roman province of Syria Palaestina. In about AD 314 he became the bishop of Caesarea Palaestina. He wrote many works, of which one of the best known is his 'Ecclesiastical History', also known as The History of the Church and The Church History, a chronological account of the development of Early Christianity from the 1st century to the 4th century. The Martyrs of Palestine relates the persecution of Christians in Caesarea under Roman Emperor Diocletian. The work survives in two forms, a shorter recension which formed part of his Ecclesiastical History, and a longer version, discovered only in 1866. Eusebius was present in Caesarea at the time of the persecutions he recounts. The present edition is in two volumes. The first volume contains a translation of the ten books of the Ecclesiastical History, and also the two recensions of the Martyrs of Palestine. The second volume contains an introduction and extensive notes by the translators, and an index. The two volumes are uniformly bound in the original dark blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spines. The cases of the books are in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling to the boards. The bottom of the spines are lightly bumped and there is heavier bumping to the top corner of the front board of volume 1. The publisher's details on the bottom of the spines is worn. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the free endpapers. There is no inscription. PLEASE NOTE: This is a fairly heavy set and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK.
