Originaire de Dijon, Bossuet fait ses études dans une école jésuite avant de s'inscrire au collège de Navarre à Paris, où il étudie la philosophie et la théologie. En 1652, il fut ordonné prêtre et devint docteur en théologie. Il passe les sept années suivantes à Metz, où il perfectionne ses compétences oratoires et politiques, avant de revenir à Paris et d'asseoir sa réputation de grand prédicateur. Au début des années 1660, Bossuet prêchait régulièrement devant la cour du roi Louis XIV à Versailles. Il fut nommé précepteur du Dauphin en 1670 et élu à l'Académie française un an plus tard en 1671. En 1681, il fut nommé évêque de Meaux, poste qu'il occupa jusqu'à sa mort.
