Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First impression of the first edition thus - includes the first publication of the fifty seven letters written by Stephen Crane (all previously unpublished). ***Near fine in dark-green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and decorative borders to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The top edge of the page-block stained dark-green by the publisher, to match the boards, and is still dark and unfaded. No discernible faults - no bumps, creases or tears. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges clean. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions or annotations. Pages clean and unfoxed. No creases or tears. ***In a very good blue typographical dustwrapper, printed in black, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 21s net. The dustwrapper is complete, but is slightly chipped, creased and rubbed at the edges - mainly at the top of the spine and top edge of the front panel. Very small hole to the edge of the rear foldover flap. A couple of small closed tears to either side of the spine at the top. Spine clean and unfaded. Back panel of dustwrapper slightly discoloured and rubbed (being a white background). ***703 pages including Bibliography at the back of the book. 202mm x 138mm. ***'The three novels, ten short stories and sixteen poems are grouped under the headings: Bowery Tales, War Tales, a Tale of the Sea, Western Tales etc. There are also fifty-seven hitherto unpublished letters. There is a general introduction and a prefatory essay to each section. ***If such proof were needed, the volume establishes the fact that the author of 'The Red Badge of Courage' was no "one book man". 'The Red Badge of Courage', undoubtedly one of the great war books of all time, is included with a critical text with the published and manuscript texts adequately noted.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***First impression of the first edition thus, with fifty seven letters by Stephen Crane published for the first time, complete in its original 1954 dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
