He completed his theological training in England at New College, London, and Mansfield College, Oxford. He married Iris Corbin in 1935, was ordained and the same year Mr. and Mrs. Clinton sailed for South Africa where Desmond became minister of the Congregational Church at Claremont, Cape Town.
