Trade Paperback. Condition: Good. New and Revised. 254 Pages with a Comprehensive Seven Page Index. Light wear to covers at the spine, corners, and edges. The interior music pages are flawless. This is the new and revised edition with over 1,000 Jigs, Reels, Hornpipes, Long Dances and Marches in a newly printed and corrected col…lection of the dance music of Ireland. Includes an introduction on the history of Irish music and tips on playing with an authentic feeling. Included are settings from the playing of Michael Coleman and the Sligo Fiddle Masters. In keeping with Frances O'Neill's philosophy - his last book was released in 1916 - the editor's goal was to update and improve O'Neill's own work by drawing on the many outstanding recorded and contemporary settings that have become popular during the last fifty years. Krassen has also attempted to apply many of the characteristics of Sligo fingering to settings of less common tunes, with the aim of making them more appealing to those enchanted by the charms of Sligo fiddling. Although the Krassen was particularly anxious to include in the settings as many beautiful touches taken from the great players as possible, this intention was somewhat restricted by the format of the book and limitations of space. In a work of this size it is only possible to go through each tune once. This precludes the possibility of including many fine variations. Yet, it is the subtle art of variation that makes the playing of Michael Coleman and other great players so consistently exciting. The best players slightly alter their setting of a tune almost every time they play through it. This means that particular flourishes are used judiciously over the course of a performance, rather than being crammed all together in one run-through. Although the editor was concerned with the problem of over-embellishing the transcriptions, it was often found desirable here to utilize flourishes from several different settings in order to produce one composite version. While some of the resulting transcriptions may appear slightly overcrowded with ornamentation, Krassen was deeply aware that everything could not be included. Nevertheless, it was considered preferable to graft on certain fine touches taken from the playing of Michael Coleman and others in order to convey stylistic nuance, rather than continue the trend of publishing bland, skeletal settings. Contents in Six Parts: Jigs, Slip Jigs, Reels, Hornpipes, Set Dances, and O'Carolan's Composition. WeInstein, Iris - Boook and Cover Design (illustrator).

As new condition cream boards, red spine, and gold spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by Ha Jin; Author Dedication; Epilogue; Extracts From Nan Wu's Poetry Journal…; Poems by Nan Wu and About the Author. "From Ha Jin, the widely acclaimed, award-winning author of Waiting and War Trash, comes a novel that takes his fiction to a new setting: 1990s America. We follow the Wu family - father Nan, mother Pingping, and son Taotao - as they fully sever their ties with China in the aftermath of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre and begin a new, free life in the United States. At first, their future seems assured - Nan's graduate work in political science at Brandeis University would guarantee him a teaching position in China - but after the fallout from Tiananmen, Nan's disillusionment turns him toward his first love, poetry. Leaving his studies, he takes on a variety of menial jobs while Pingping works for a wealthy widow as a cook and housekeeper. As Nan struggles to adapt to a new language and culture, his love of poetry and literature sustains him through difficult, lean years. Ha Jin creates a moving, realistic , but always hopeful narrative as Nan moves from Boston to New York to Atlanta, ever in search of financial stability and success, even in a culture that sometimes feels oppressive and hostile. As Pingping and Taotao slowly adjust to American life, Nan still feels a strange, paradoxical attachment to his homeland, though he violently disagrees with Communist policy. And severing all ties - including his love for a woman who rejected him in his youth - proves to be more difficult than he could ever have imagined. Ha Jin's prodigious talents are evident in this powerful new book, which brilliantly brings to life the struggles and successes that characterize the contemporary immigrant experience. With its lyrical prose and confidant grace, A Free Life is a luminous addition to the works of one of the preeminent writers in America today." - from the inner front jacket flap. Illustrated with a section of black-and-white photographic plates. "Drawing on newly declassified government files, this is the dramatic story of how a forbidden book in the Soviet Union became a secret CIA weapon in the ideological battle between East and West. In May 1956, an Italian publishing scout took a train to a village just outside Moscow to visit Russia's greatest living poet, Boris Pasternak. He left carrying the original manuscript of Pasternak's first and only novel, entrusted to him with these worlds: "This is Doctor Zhivago. May it make its way around the world." Pasternak believed his novel was ulnlikely ever to be published in the Soviet Union, where the authorities regarded it as an irredeemable assault on the 1917 Revolution. But he thought it stood a chance in the West, and, indeed, beginning in Italy, Doctor Zhivago was widely published in translation throughout the world. From there the life of this extraordinary book entered the realm of the spy novel. The CIA, which recognized that the Cold War was above all an ideological battle, published a Russian language edition of Doctor Zhivago and smuggled it into the Soviet Union. Copies were devoured in Moscow and Leningrad, sold on the black market, and passed surreptitiously from friend to friend. Pasternak's funeral in 1960 was attended by thousands of admirers who defied their government to bid him farewell. The example he set launched the great tradition of the writer-dissident in the Soviet Union. In The Zhivago Affair, [the authors') bring us intimately close to this charming, passionate, and complex artist. First to obtain CIA files providing concrete proof of the agency's involvement, the authors give us a literary thriller that takes us back to a fascinating period of the Cold War - to a time when literature had the power to stir the world." -from the jacket flap. "With groundbreaking reporting and character-rich storytelling Peter Finn and Petra Couvee uncover the high-stakes drama behind one of the Cold War's strangest turning points. Passionately written and acutely aware of the historical context, The Zhivago Affair almost makes one nostalgic for a time when novels were so important that even the CIA cared about them." - Ken Kalfus, author. "A thrilling literary espionage yarn, but much more than that. Finn and Couvee shed new light on the Cold War struggle for the hearts and minds of millions of people, introducing a cast of characters - poets and spies, idealists and cynics, politicians and dissidents - who could have stepped out of the pages of Doctor Zhivago itself." - Michael Dobbs, author. "A sparkling and fascinating account of how one of the most important novels of the twentieth century found its way back to Russia, a juggernaut of truth thrust into the Soviet darkness. Finn and Couvee elegantly and authoritatively capture Pasternak's brilliance, the courage of his friends, and the CIA's hidden role in bringing the forbidden book to Russian readers." - David E. Hoffman, Pilutzer Prize-winning author. "The most detailed account to date of the evnents that suddenly placed one of Russia's greatest poets in the center of the struggle between Soviet and Western propaganda machines at the height of the Cold War. Pasternak's personal courage in the face of this totally incongruous conflict is the quality that emerges most clearly from this well paced narrative, which is especially commendalbe for its avoidance of all romantic exaggeration - a quality Pasternak himself strove for in Doctor Zhivago. The book is of great relevance today, when such conflicts seem (but only seem) to have disappeared." - Richard Pevear, co-translator of Doctor Zhivago. Weinstein, Iris (book design); Abrams, Mark (jacket design) (illustrator).

"Jennifer Grant is the only child of Cary Grant, who was, and continues to be, the epitome of all that is elegant, sophisticated, and deft. Almost half a century after Cary Grant's retirement from the screen, he remains the quintessential romantic comic movie star. He stopped making movies when his daughter was born so that he could be with her and raise her, which is just what he did. Good Stuff is an enchanting portraint of the profound and loving relationship between a daughter and her father, who just happens to be one of America's most iconic male movie starts. Cary Grant's own personal childhood archives were burned in World War I, and he took painstaking care to ensue that his daughter would have an accurate record of her early life. In Good Stuff, Jennifer Grant writes of their life together through her high shcool and college years until Grant's death and the age of eighty-two. Cary Grant had a happy way of living, and he gave that to his daughter. He invented the phrase "good stuff" to mean happiness. For the last twenty years of his life, his daughter experienced the full vital passion of her father's heart, and she now - delightfully - gives us a taste of it. She writes of the lessons he taught her; of the love he showed her; of his childhood as well as her own. Here are letters, notes, and funny cards written from father to daughter and those written from her to him.as well as bits of conversation between them (Cary Grant kept a tape recorder going for most of their time together). She writes of their life at 9966 Beverly Grove Drive, living in a farmhouse in the midst of Beverly Hills, playing, laughing, dining, and dancing through the thick and thin of Jennifer's growing up; the years of his work, his travels, his friendships with "old Hollywood royalty" (the Sinatras, the Pecks, the Poitiers, et al.) and with just plain-old royalty (the Rainiers). We see Grant the playful dad; Grant the clown, sharing his gifts of laughter through his warm spirit; Grant teaching his daughter about life, about love, about boys, about manners and money, about acting and living. Cary Grant was given the indefinable incandescence of charm. He was a pip. Good Stuff captures his special quality. It gives us the magic of a father's devotion (and goofball-ness) as it reveals a daughter's special odyssey and education of loving, and being loved, by a dad who was Cary Grant." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Weinstein, Iris (book design); Carson, Carol Devine (jacket design); Grant, Jennifer (photographs) (illustrator).
