Add to basketFrom the Macqueen-Pope papers. See his entry, and that of Brooke, in the Oxford DNB. The five items are in good condition, lightly aged and worn. ONE: Carbon of Typed Article titled 'London Was Unlucky to Him / The Story of Gustavus Brooke, The Tragic Tragedian'. 11pp, 4to, on eleven leaves. Begins: There is nothing so ephemeral as the art of the actor. Very very few of the names live on. Yet there are some, who in their day were of the first magnitude and are now forgotten, save for the delving historian. That is a pity, for many of them deserve a niche in Fame and such a one was Gustavus Vaughan Brooke, the Tragic Tragedian. His life was one long exciting adventure of triumph and disaster. [.] He was one of the great ones of the early nineteenth century. His life ad his career resembled that of Edmund Kean.' TWO: Carbon of (apparently earlier) draft of article. 11pp, 4to. No changes to text are apparent, but the layout is different. THREE: Another carbon of Item Two. FOUR: Carbon of TL from MP to the editor of 'Everybody's' Greville Poke (also see his entry in the Oxford DNB). 13 July 1950. He is sending 'the story of Gustavus Brooke. I know it is a little long but, believe me, it is a great story.' He has 'plenty of illustrations'. Elsewhere he writes that he is 'rather sorry' Poke did not like his 'suggestion concerning the musical comedy situation because this turned out to be what I think is one of the best articles I have ever written. I sold it elsewhere at once'. FIVE: TNS written on behalf of the editor of 'Everybody's' magazine, Greville Poke (also see his entry in the Oxford DNB), on the magazine's letterhead, 14 July 1950. 1p, 4to. Signed 'for Greville / WS'. Reads: 'My dear Popie, / Thanks for sending along the manuscript of GUSTAVUS BROOKE. I shall be getting into this in the near future, I hope.'.

Condition: Good. New York, September 20th, 1886., 1886. Good. - Over 22 words of prose penned by the Irish-American actor, singer, playwright and lyricist Edward Harrigan on 6-7/8 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide buff paper. Dated Sept. 10th 1886, the words were penned soon after his comedic play "The Leather Patch" was performed at Harrigan's Park Theatre in New York City, with "Park Theatre" penned by Harrigan along the top. "Life without love is like a cake of ice drifting along the endless rivers of Time." Harrigan concludes with a few words in Irish. Signed in full "Edward Harrigan". The edges of the page are darkened. The page has been mounted with glue from the verso on a 7-3/8 inch high by 9-1/2 inch wide sheet removed from an album. Also mounted next to Harrigan's lyrics are over 16 words of prose penned by the English-born American stage actress Annie Robe on a 3-1/2 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide sheet. Dated Feb. 6th 1887, Robe has written "I wish it was spring / All the year round / And that roses grew / Under our feet / (Sheridan)". Signed "Annie Robe". There are slight glue stains to the corners. Mounted on the verso of the sheet are the autographs of 3 other theatrical personalities. That of the late 19th Century American stage actress Marie Burroughs is penned on 3-1/2 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide card stock. The American theatrical manager Albert Marshman Palmer has signed himself "Yours very truly, A.M. Palmer" on 3-1/2 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide card stock mounted diagonally as to slightly overlap the previous card. The renowned French opera-bouffe actress and singer Marie Aimee has penned the words "To Mme [___?] Marie Aimee Oct. 4, 1886" on 3-3/8 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide card stock mounted as to overlap the bottom border of the previous autograph. The left edge of the soiled and slightly creased sheet removed from the autograph album is slightly chipped. Good. The Irish-American actor, singer, dancer, playwright, lyricist and theater producer Edward Harrigan (1844-1911) formed one of the most celebrated theatrical partnerships of the 19th century with Tony Hart. Harrigan is known as one of the founding fathers of modern American musical theater whose productions of multi-act plays incorporated physical comedy with singing and dancing. Harrigan & Hart's breakthrough hit came with "The Mulligan Guard", a lampoon of an Irish neighborhood militia with music by his future father-in-law David Braham. The sequel "The Mulligan Guard Picnic" settled itself on Broadway in 1878 and integrated more of a story line. Having separated from Hart in the meantime, by 1886 Harrigan's comedic play "The Leather Patch", also with songs by David Braham, opened at the Park Theatre in New York City on February 15, 1886. The late 19th century American stage actress Marie Burroughs (1866-1926) played prominent roles in many plays. The American theatrical manager Albert Marshman Palmer (1838-1905) was well known in the theatrical world as A.M. Palmer. The renowned French opera-bouffe actress and singer Marie Aimee (1852-1887) gained international fame in the 1870's, touring the United States, Mexico and Cuba with her own company. Known for her wit and charm, she performed in Jacques Offenbach's Operettas. Her career was brief as she passed away at the age of 35. The English-born American actress Annie Robe (1866-1922) came to prominence in the last decades of the Victorian era.

Condition: Very good. - A few words to do with financial arrangements penned on 2-3/4 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide buff paper signed "Yours faithfully Dion Boucicault". Once folded, the paper is mounted onto stiffer backing and the corners have been clipped. Very good. The Irish actor and playwright Dionysius Lardner "Dion" Boucicault (1820[2]-1890) was known for his melodramas and recognized in both Europe and America as one of the most successful English language actor-playwright-managers of the period. Although he and his wife had both become American citizens in 1873, the New York Times praised him as "the most conspicuous English dramatist of the 19th century" following his death in 1890.

Add to basket4pp., 4to. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed on the reverse of the second leaf to 'T: P: Cooke Esqre | Royal Coburg Theatre', with two postmarks. The two men do not appear to have been related. TSC requests TPC's 'friendly interference to endeavour at getting from Mr. Chilvers music copyist to the Coburg Theatre a Symphony which he got from me two months since under a promise to let me have it copied in six days.' TSC states 'I have been seriously injured (and am unlikely to be more so) in my profession for want of it, as it is a work of much labour and I have been compelled to repeatedly disappoint those to whom its perusal was to be submitted for their approval of my qualifications for a situation of considerable import to me-'. He has 'time after time allowed sufficient scope to avoid interference' with Chilvers' 'duty to the Theatre But in fact he trifles with me beyond all endurance, and what is worse has made me appear to do so with others who have it in their power much to serve me.' He continues to complain of Chilvers' 'shameful neglect', and requests from TPC 'all the convenient dispatch in this affair in your power'. Accompanying the letter is an original engraved portrait by Thomson from Burgess of 'MR. T. COOKE, AS CARLOS.', published in 1818 by Simpkin & Marshall. It is lightly spotted, but otherwise in good condition on a 12mo leaf.

Add to basket6pp., 4to, good condition, IN IRISH, translation as follows: "(On top) Write to me soon! ||Deirdre, my dear friend I was delighted to receive your letter. Thank you very much. Forgive me for not writing much earlier: we are all greatly upset here over the deaths of Arthur Griffith and Michael Collins isn't it terrible news! I cannot believe it is true I don't know what the country will do without them. It disgusts me to think of Michael Collinsand the way they killed him like a dog; a curse on them, may they choke, the dirty villains! He was a fine man; I saw the account your brother Roibeárd [Robert Lynd] wrote about him in the Daily News did you see it? I feel proud that Richard Mulcahy will be taking his place; I think he is a good man: do you know him? But look, I get very angry when I think about it I hope the other side is satisfied now. Do you know there is an Irish woman here and she is strongly on the side of De Valera; I don't have to tell you she has not set a foot on the land of Ireland since she was a small girl and I suppose she is afraid that she will not be 'Irish enough' if she is on the side of the Free State she's another Erskine Childers, my dear. She told Máire O'Keefe that Harry Boland had been murdered she heard it from some priest: did you hear anything about that? 'And isn't it a terrible thing that they didn't have an inquest'. 'Terrible altogether,' said Máire' 'it's strange that his own people did not ask for one. Cathal Brugha had one'. I was sorry about the death of Harry Boland all the same, he was a nice boy. But did you hear that they murdered him? I think it is only a rumour. About Paris I am sad to say and it grieves my heart to tell you that I don't think that I will be able to come. I am in a rage about it, but what can I do? I have no money saved or anything; apart from this I would be able to come, and I would love it. Oh, why can't I? Alas! It makes me angry! And to think that you and Lucie will be there without me. I would like to kill myself when I think of it. But listen I have a strong intention if I can to save some money; I would like to come home for a short while to Dublin anyway maybe in the Autumn. You see, I could stay in London for a short while and sell pictures there, and then put in three weeks or so in Dublin. Wouldn't this be nice ? I am working at present on a couple of book covers for Hodder and Stoughton and I hope to get more work from them they give good money although I do not like the work much. But one must live! By the way . The Swiss who are a lot of contemptibles. I don't think much of them they are *** (unclear word), stupid, mean, frigid, misunderstanding [used by him as an adjective here], fat etc., etc., etc.! Of course I'd like a change if possible. But I must wait. There are many Irish here and we drink tea together nearly every day and we are continually talking of Ireland. We're all Free-Staters .[He finishes with] Sunday: Dublin Monday: Sevilla Wednesday: Howth Thursday: Taormina (?) ETC. ETC". Maire Gaster has written a note on the original envelope identifying the recipient and revealing Mac Liamoir's passion for her.
