Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Trade PB. 8vo. Square. Hyde Gallery, Grossmont College, El Cajon, CA. 2000. 64 pgs. B/W photographs & plates. Illustrated with 23 photographic plates. Signed by Henry Wessel on the half-title page with lengthy note from Wessel present to the FFEP. Wrappers lightly worn with some light shelf-wear to the extremities present. Book is free of ownership marks. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Taken during a series of late night strolls through an unidentified West Los Angeles neighborhood, Henry Wessel's luminous black and white photographs of Spanish style bungalows, one bedroom matchbox homes, and courtyard apartment buildings reveal the slippery interplay between the homes people live in and the social and material "facts" we infer from them. These anonymous dwellings cloaked in shadows or bathed in the moon's incandescent glow, conjure the penumbral settings of film noir, as does Wessel's use of light and shadow to illuminate the shifty nature of things that appear to be self evident. Plain covers with ms. title-slip, measuring approx. 19,2 x 27cm, minor wear and worming (restored) slightly affecting the illustrations and text but overall a very good copy. 42ff. 1st part signed by Hirano Sadahiko, dated An'ei 9 [1780], 2nd part dated and signed by Otagaki Shin in the colophon Kansei 8 [i.e. 1796] but an early Meiji copy, [i.e. after Ise Sadatake (1717-1784) was a historian with a particular focus on the correct behaviour of the samurai class. The present work was circulated exclusively in manuscript prior to the dissolution of the feudal system in 1869. The text and illustrations explain in detail the consecutive stages of putting on a suit of armour. This complex procedure involved five layers of dress each of which had to be securely tied. The present manual consists of two parts, the 'Yoroi chakuyo zu' and the 'Yoshiie Ason yoroi chakuyo zu'. The reference to the famous Minamoto Yoshiie of the Heian period in the title of the second part was a device to connect to the earlier roots of the samurai tradition. While the Edo period was generally speaking a time of peace, all samurai were obliged to train in swordsmanship and martial arts. According to the colophon the present item was copied by Otagaki Shin (?) in 1796, but this is possibly a later copy.
