This is No. XII in the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) Series, a subset in The Publications of the Champlain Society series. Edited with an Introduction by E. E. Rich who was assisted by A. M. Johnson. This volume contains the transcription of an autobiographical account by James Isham (1716-1761), an Anglo-Canadian chief factor (master) who worked for Hudson's Bay Company at York Fort and Fort Prince of Wales. Isham provides one of the most comprehensive accounts of the Canadian frontier and HBC's activities during the eighteenth century. In 1732, Isham was sent to York Fort when he was 16 years old to work as a clerk or bookkeeper. As a clerk, he was commended for his sobriety and upstanding character by the master of the fort and eventually worked his way up to chief factor himself. Isham's account is filled with a wealth of information about various aspects of Canadian frontier life. He also drew a few sketches to accompany his writings. His account begins with a brief dictionary of English words and phrases and their phonetic translations in Cree. According to Rich, this period in Canadian history was marked by relatively amicable relations between European traders and Indigenous communities based on transactional peace. Isham describes many of the cultural customs of the Cree and other Indigenous tribes. He also describes several Canadian species of birds and other animals. There is also brief description of beaver-hunting methods. Notably, Isham was in charge of both Fort Prince of Wales and York Factory in two separate occasions where exploratory ships trying to find the Northwest Passage had to overwinter at the forts. Each time, this caused great contention between Isham and the captains of the ships. In the latter instance, at York Factory, the crew of one of the ships published an account critical of Isham and HBC. Appended to Isham's main account is his rebuttal to the crew's assertions they made against him and HBC in Henry Ellis's A Voyage to Hudsons Bay in the Dobbs Galley. Front colophon: "Five Hundred and Fifty Copies of this Volume have been printed. Fifty are reserved for Editorial purposes. The remaining Five Hundred are supplied only to Members of the Society and to Subscribing Libraries. This copy is No. 356.".…

Isham was sent by the Hudson's Bay Company to York Fort (York Factory) in 1732. He was made a chief factor in 1737 and placed in charge of Churchill in 1741. "Written in a conversational style by a man of wide interests, [Isham's Observations] contain a vivid picture of many features of day-to-day life. Although this account was not primarily concerned with fur-trade policy, Isham noticed the success of the French traders and felt that the Hudson's Bay Company should not sit idly at the Bay but should send men inland." (Story p. 385) Included are observations on the fauna of the region, and First Nation's customs and hunting practices, some native vocabularies, and notes intended to correct errors in Henry Ellis's 'Voyage to Hudson's Bay' (1748). The introduction by Rich contains discussion of the Dobbs-Middleton controversy over the existence of a north-west passage. TPL 4705.…

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In the long arc of history, empires do not fall in a single day. The Dismantling of America is a profound, unflinching investigation into the slow, inexorable unravelling of the United States as a global superpower. Author James E. Isham argues that American decline is not merely a political failure but a systemic collapse, accelerated by imperial overreach, deep social polarisation, and the hollowing out of democratic norms.Centring on the 2026 war against Iran as a "catalyst" for this acceleration, Isham traces the anatomy of American decline across diplomatic, economic, and cultural registers. The book examines the "spectacle of empty power"-a political system paralysed by bipartisan strife and captured by special interests-and the "corrosion" of the American Dream itself, now beset by profound alienation and internal division.Isham avoids prophecy and partisan rhetoric, offering instead a sober "exercise in mourning" and a meditation on what has been lost. By confronting the brutal reality of an "edifice that cracks beyond repair", this work challenges readers to discard the myths of exceptionalism and unlimited power. It asks a difficult, necessary question: can a nation, in its hour of greatest trial, summon the courage to let go of what it has been to become what it must be?Neither a call for restoration nor a work of despair, The Dismantling of America is an urgent demand for a new, wiser purpose. It is a vital, essential guide for understanding the shifting contours of our post-American world. An unflinching look at the systemic collapse of a superpower. Tracing the cracks in a nation's foundation, this work is a sober meditation on the end of an era and a search for a new purpose in a post-hegemonic world. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Dismantling of America is a stark, eloquent meditation on a superpower at the edge. Moving from the corrosion of democratic norms to the shockwaves of foreign policy overreach, James E. Isham traces the invisible threads binding domestic fracture to global realignment. Through vivid argument and sweeping synthesis, the book contends that America's crisis is not a single event but an accelerating convergence: permanent war and imperial overstretch, economic precarity and cultural exhaustion, broken alliances abroad and broken trust at home. From the cataclysmic presidency that normalised norm-breaking to the 2026 war that exposed the vulnerability of forward bases and the fragility of credibility, Isham shows how spectacle replaced substance and how power, unmoored from purpose, became empty theatre. Yet this is not a screed. It is a reckoning-and an invitation. Across chapters on social dissolution, media illusion, bipartisan decay, and the emergence of a multipolar world, the author asks what remains worth saving and how a nation might trade supremacy for wisdom and dominance for dignity.Combining political theory and contemporary reportage, The Dismantling of America engages Kennedy, Johnson, Nye, Mearsheimer, Bacevich, and others to illuminate the road from hegemony to humility. Its conclusion is bracing: reform is still possible, but only if America abandons comforting myths, confronts the costs of its choices, and rebuilds legitimacy from the inside out.For readers of Bacevich, Piketty, Zakaria, and Snyder, this book offers a powerful framework to understand the post-American moment - and a humane compass for what could come after the fall.Remarkably clear-eyed and unsentimental, The Dismantling of America is a field guide to a vanishing order and a manifesto for renewal grounded not in nostalgia but in reality.
