Hardcover. Bound in tan old parchment, black lettering on spine, [24], 471, [14], 430 pages, small bw illustrations. Book is in a closed cardboard box with black leather spine. Spine has four raised bands and no lettering. Text in Latin. No other copies of this have been sold or are for sale. A Scarce find. VG (boards have wear and staining with small tear along bottom front, book plate and writing on ffep from previous owners. Staining to block. Pages are remarkably clear and clean with light age toning as expected.).

[240], [24] pp. Latin text in a clear Roman type. Bound in reused medieval vellum, taken from a 15th-century liturgical antiphonal, beautifully decorated with red staves, black square notation, and a large illuminated initial in purple and red. A striking and authentic example of early bookbinding reuse (reliure de parchemin réemployé). Inside, the book reveals its long afterlife: Contemporary handwritten notes in Latin concerning legal concepts of pledge (pignus), novation, and obligation, likely by a 17th-century jurist or student of Roman law. Later pencil sketches and caricatures, including one labelled "Rousseau.", probably late 18th or early 19th century, offer a glimpse of Enlightenment-era marginalia added to a 17th-century legal classic. Printed by Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam, from the same learned family renowned for their cartographic and scholarly printing. Condition: Minor wear to lower spine where the vellum has lifted slightly, exposing the sewing. Otherwise complete, clean, and structurally sound. Pages gently aged, with fine early paper and visible chainlines. A remarkable survival with charm and character. Provenance layers: 1625 ? Printed by Hondius, Amsterdam. 17th century ?
