Hardcover. Condition: VG. No Jacket. Roy Cross (illustrator). 1st. This study of the history of the RAF covers its concept, foundations and earliest days, as the Royal Flying Corps from 1912, and of the part it played in WWI, up to its re-establishement as the RAF with the merger of the RFC and the Royal Naval Air Service on April 1, 1918. Ironically, it was not until 1943 with World War II raging, that Air Commodore Chamier was able to publish this book, although the manuscript was completed early in 1939. It was written in his belief that there had been no informal history of the RAF and its origins produced, although there was a six volume official history of the British air operations in WWI. With the sub- title "The early history and experiences of the Flying Services" the author's study reveals the remarkable extent to which military aviation progressed during the 1914-18 conflict, it is comprehensive, objective and easy to follow with a chronological progression. In 17 chapters he covers all threatres in which British aircraft were involved, beginning with "The Days Before the War" and "The Baptism of War 1914". Naturally, the aerial war on the Western Front provides the bulk of the text while the "side -shows" further afield are certainly not ignored. Other aspects, such as the Zepplin offensive and later German bombing raids over Britain, training methods, the RNAS, and the eventual German surrender, receive the author's attention. Despite of the fact that the book was produced to "war economy standards" it is a quality production on high grade paper and enlivened with 22 full page classic drawings by Roy Cross depicting the major aircaft flown by the RFC and RAF during WWI, some also include aircraft used by the enemy, each illustration has a small panel with aircraft vital statistics, also there are nine maps of campaign areas. First edition of 1943 from Pitman, 199 pages, b/w aircraft drawings and maps. Blue hard covers with gilt front and spine titles are VG with small faded area top front board, lower front corner slightly bumped, small section (4cm by 3cm) cut from top edge FFEP, text block otherwise excellent, no inscriptions, few light foxing spots on RFEP.
