Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. A very good clean copy with some light tanning and an ownership inscription. The jacket has a little light edge wear and some chipping. The Wanganui Story is a generously illustrated local history tracing the development of the Whanganui district from early settlement through to the modern city of the 1970s. Smart and Bates draw on newspaper archives, early photographs, and local records to follow the growth of the river town, its industries, civic life, schools, sports, and notable personalities. The book places strong emphasis on the Whanganui River as the region's defining feature, showing how transport, trade, tourism, and community identity were shaped by it. Produced by Wanganui Newspapers Ltd, it has the feel of a community history ? accessible, image?driven, and rich in local detail ? and remains a useful snapshot of the district's past.

Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Maps (illustrator). Second. Wanganui is the city at the entrance to what is probably of NZ's most famous river, of the same name. The authors have collaborated to produce a valued history extending back to the arrival of the Maori, according to legend in 950AD, to their own later times, often troubled by inter-tribal conflict, early contacts with European navigators and explorers, although it was not until the 1830s the first sailed into the river seeking trade. Soon many settlers followed and the bulk of the book relates to the colonial development, the land wars and the peace that followed, up to the years post-WWII. Thorough coverage is given to all aspects of development, agriculture, industry, commerce, social and civic, educational, religious and recreation. It is, as the DJ flap notes, a readable general social history, not a listing of facts and dates. First published 1972, this second edition the following year. 318 pages including index, 52 b/w illustrations, mainly photos, five maps/plans. Brown hard covers with gilt spine titles VG, light tape shadows both boards, also on front pastedown, text block excellent, no inscriptions. Wrap-round colour art DJ plastic film protected and VG+.
