The author, a keen observer, documents his journey across the bustling port cities and vast landscapes of the United States, sharing his experiences with a mix of wit and insight. He paints vivid pictures of everyday life, from the noisy streets of New York City, with its bustling markets and political rallies, to the elegant steamboats navigating the Hudson River, and the captivating beauty of natural landscapes. The author's perspective is particularly illuminating on the topic of slavery, a deeply ingrained institution in the American South at the time. His firsthand observations of the institution's cruel reality, coupled with his outspoken condemnation, make this book a vital historical document reflecting a crucial moment in American history. This book offers a unique and engaging account of a pivotal era, providing a rare window into a world grappling with the complexities of a nation seeking to define itself. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, hardcover, circa 1853, London. Condition is Very Good. Volume has recently been conserved, recased with original boards and spine, new endpapers, text block resewn. Red cloth boards have general patina. Lacks original endpapers, frontis and ads in back. The copies at the Library of Congress and British Museum also lack the frontis so don't feel too bad. Interior is very good: small closed tear on title page, occasional smudge and occasional foxing. Small format book 7 x 4.5 inches. Author documents the deep problems of slavery and includes several pages on president-to-be Zachary Taylor. "I was told that flogging his negroes was a favourite pastime . . ."(p.133). Author was less sympathetic to the Seminoles who were dealing with abolition of a different sort. I can include a modern reprint of the 1857 edition if you want a reading copy. Text is identical. Just let me know. See Howes B368. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Date is generally agreed as circa 1853 but I do not know how that was arrived at. A second dated edition was published in 1857 by Ward & Lock. Author mentions Uncle Tom's Cabin by Stowe which was published in 1851, so 1853 is a reasonable guess. More notes: The cover is a clever anti-slavery statement: "the flagstaff, to which the American flag is attached, surmounted by a Liberty cap, is represented as the handle of a cat-o-nine tails whip, and is stuck through the link of a great chain." [From old dealer catalog on Rare Book Hub]. [slavery, antebellum south, Seminole war]. Even More Notes: I found an image of the missing frontis at the Bodleian Library. Feel free to inquire.
