Hardcover. Condition: Good minus. First Edition. This scarce original edition is offered despite problems of condition. 6 issues bound as one volume, not including original wraps or advertisements. Octavo, 10" tall, [2] + 620 + 4 engraved plate pages, quarter cloth over boards. A good copy only, given that the covers and fly-leaves are loose, the cloth back strip is partially missing, the boards are edge worn scuffed and worn through at the fore-corner tips--BUT the interior is in very good condition, paper clean, supple (pre-civil war paper was of a generally higher quality) only lightly yellowed, and relatively unfoxed. Still a good reading copy of this mostly original compendium of the culture in the middle of the 19th Century. A period time-capsule of the intellectual state of mind.

Through a detailed analysis of data collected from school children whose parents were born outside of the US, the author presents a thought-provoking exploration of language retention and assimilation. The study reveals that despite the common assumption that foreign-born parents quickly adopt English in their homes, a significant number continue to use their native languages, even after decades of living in America. The author delves into the reasons behind this phenomenon, examining the impact of factors such as social and cultural ties, educational opportunities, and the general environment. This book sheds light on the complex dynamics of language acquisition and assimilation, offering valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by immigrant families as they navigate their new environment.
