HARVEST OF THE LOWLANDS is the first collection on a serious and ambitious scale which enables the English-reading world to enjoy the prose art of a people closely connected with ours in history. The selections represent the work of writers from 1880 to the present day and are given added significance by a critical- historical survey of Dutch literature as a whole. This Introduction is extremely valuable for the wealth and succinctness of its material and for its interpretative point of view which provides a key to the prolific energy of Dutch writers during the past half-century.' 'The history of Netherlands literature reveals an uninterrupted contest between the two elements, feeling and reason, which like fire and water by their contrast and latent potentialities rule human existence, remarks the editor.
