Raised from volunteers at a time of national crisis, the regiment was comprised of energetic, patriotic young men who yearned to prove their mettle in combat. Along the way, the narrative captures the camaraderie, courage, and resilience of these citizen soldiers, shedding light on the personal sacrifices and contributions of ordinary individuals in the extraordinary context of the American Civil War. Illustrated letterhead on single sheet with two page letter datelined St. Anthony, December 22, 1857. 10" x 7.65" sheet, illustration 4.75" x 3". Left edge slightly uneven. Engraving by famed illustrator John William Orr (1815-1887) of New York. The manuscript letter is signed George and is sent to his brother, and describes the possibility of making the 250 mile journey to his family in Prairie du Chien on foot. 2) "City of Saint Paul. August, 1853." Illustrated letterhead on bifold sheet, three pages of manuscript text, final page blank, datelined Kasota, Minnesota, January 23, 1859. 10.6" x 8.35" page size, illustration 8" x 4.75". Some older tape repairs to inside at folds. A highly attractive view of early Minnesota settlement based on a daguerreotype taken by Joel E. Whitney (1822-1886), best known for his portraits of Native American leaders during the 1860s. The daguerreotype was adapted into a woodcut by artist William H. Van Ingen, and published by Scott & Fulton, Printers of Chicago. The manuscript letter, signed P. G. Benson, is addressed to cousin Jabez Benson and describes his recent return to Minnesota from the east and the recent discovery of gold that began the Pike's Peak gold rush in 1858. Together an excellent pair of engraved letterheads illustrating territorial Minnesota. This bookseller has been unable to locate any other copies or records of the View of St. Peter.
