Im Kaffeehaus wurden literarische Schulen und Stile geboren und verworfen, vom Kaffeehaus nahmen neue Richtungen der Malerei, der Musik, der Architektur ihren Ausgang. Begonnen hatte es in der Zeit des Fin de siècle mit dem Griensteidl, dem Literatencafé, das Hofmannsthal u…nd Schnitzler besuchten. Später fand die Literatur eine neue Heimat im Café Central: Hier trafen sich u. a. Peter Altenberg, Oskar Kokoschka und Karl Kraus. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg öffnete das Café Herrenhof: Franz Werfel, Hermann Broch, Robert Musil und Joseph Roth gehörten zu seinen Besuchern. Nach 1945 trat das Café Hawelka die Nachfolge des Literatencafés an. Einige dieser alten Kaffeehäuser sind bis heute erhalten. Ein Verzeichnis mit den wichtigsten Kaffeehäusern der Gegenwart rundet diesen Band ab.
