First separate edition and first printing in French, 8vo, uncut, fine in contemporary wrappers, with fold-down box of grey paper on boards, lettered in silver; pp. xii+89 including half-title, engraved title-page vignette. Rare. The only separate printing of Pallas' journey to Tibet on his first expedition through the Russian Empire and Northern Asia 1768-1769, translated from Vol. I and III of the first edition, in German, published in 3 vols. in St. Petersburg 1771-76 ['Reisen durch verschiedene Provinzen des russischen Reichs']. The text was not printed in the first or second French editions 1788-1793 and 1794. Reuilly's introduction notes his "some years in Tibet and Kashmir, and English possessions in India" and confirms that this portion of Pallas's travels through the Russian Empire was not included in the French edition. This separate printing is extensively annotated with Reuilly's comments on Tibet, including the missions of Bogle and Stewart, Georgi, and Andrade's account of 1795 on Bogle, Turner and Pourunguir, and on Tibet-Britain-China relations, and his own observations along with those of other writers on Tibet. He further discusses the route of the Anadyr River and Mongolia-Tibet relations. Cordier 727. Yakushi 1994, P32.
