Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. J. S. Polack (180782) lived in New Zealand during 18317 and 184250. An enterprising businessman and land speculator, he traded in timber and flax and in 1835 set up the first brewery in the country. He also learned the Maori language, and warned against the destructive effects of unorganized European settlement on Maori society, while arguing for the benefits of systematic colonization. This two-volume work, published in 1838, was the first of two successful books Polack published about his experiences in New Zealand and is still regarded as an important and impartial source about the period immediately preceding the Treaty of Waitangi. Volume 1 outlines the discovery of the islands, their climate, geology, fauna and population. Volume 2 focuses on Maori material culture, traditional beliefs, and warfare (including lurid reports of cannibalism), and on the early interactions of Maori and Europeans through trade, missions and whaling. J. S. Polack (180782), businessman and land speculator, spent most of the 1830s in New Zealand. In this 1838 publication, still regarded as an important, impartial source, he records his experiences there, vividly describing the country's natural history, his encounters with the Maori, and his observations of their culture. Complete set with half titles, with the folding map [closed tear], portraits, woodcuts. Original brown publishers blind-stamp cloth with decorative gilt spines, yellow endpapers. [joint wear] [ '1838, he advocated colonisation in evidence given before a House of Lords select committee of inquiry 'into the present state of the islands of New Zealand'. He also promoted New Zealand in two books based on his experiences. New Zealand, being a narrative of travels and adventures during a residence in that country between the years 1831 and 1837 (two volumes, 1838) and Manners and customs of the New Zealanders; with notes corroborative of their habits, usages, etc., and remarks to intending emigrants (two volumes, 1840). Polack saw unorganised European settlement as destructive of M?ori society, and argued that only through systematic colonisation would the M?ori survive. The M?ori people would welcome colonisation by the British, he argued, and would benefit both in 'their Minds and their Bodies' through employment by 'civilized persons'. A Good Set.
