Wesley Cooper is a landmark architectural photography book and historical survey that showcases the extraordinary preservation of pre-Civil War architecture in Natchez, Mississippi. Originally published by Edward Stern and Co., it serves as both a coffee table art piece and a structural reference guide for historians and Southern regional collectors. Overview & Visual Innovation The book is highly regarded for its early application of "Optakrome" full-color plates, providing a rich, vibrant visual medium that dramatically captures the grandeur of these estates. Because Natchez surrendered early in the American Civil War, it avoided the widespread architectural destruction seen across the rest of the South, leaving behind the highest concentration of antebellum suburban villas in the United States. Cooper's work formally documents this unique structural legacy. Key Content & Focus Areas Detailed Architectural Profiles: The book offers a house-by-house curation of iconic mansions like Stanton Hall, Longwood, Melrose, and Dunleith. It highlights their transitions through prominent design styles including Federal, Greek Revival, and eclectic styles like the Byzantine-domed Longwood. Floor Plan Layouts: Beyond simple exterior imagery, the book features comprehensive floor plan illustrations sketched by local draftsmen and artists (such as Edna Elizabeth Farmer and James Harmond Arnold), mapping out the flow, scale, and structural engineering of these sprawling villas. Preservation History: It tracks the efforts of early preservationists and local garden clubs who actively worked to prevent these structures from falling into ruin, creating a localized tourism industry out of the town's history. Signed by Author(s).
