From the Dust Jacket: "FAITHFUL FRIENDS is a superb collection of the wonderfully diverse and prolific observations that have been recorded about dogs and their relations with us through the ages. The fruit of many years' research by a lifelong breeder and dogman, the sources here are as varied as the subjects they explore. FAITHFUL FRIENDS contains joyously funny, sometimes entrancing, often serious and informative descriptions that range from classical Greece to contemporary Britain and America, from sportsmen to breeders, philosophers to ploughmen, poets and politicians to kings. Here are the things worth saying about canine character, form and variety; friendship, fidelity and constancy; herding and hunting, rural pursuits and companionship. Many writers have commented on the camaraderie and good cheer whenever dog-lovers meet; their best work is given here. There are observations on the dog's extraordinarily acute senses and natural intelligence, and finally there are poignant and inventive epitaphs on the inevitable end of the friendship." Bound in the original gilt-lettered red boards. . First U.S. Edition. Hard Cover. Fine condition./Near Fine dust jacket. 8vo. x, 533pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. This collection presents, for the first time, a much-needed synthesis of the major research themes and findings that characterize the Woodland Period in the southeastern United States. The Woodland Period (ca. 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1000) has been the subject of a great deal of archaeological research over the past 25 years. Researchers have learned that in this approximately 2000-year era the peoples of the Southeast experienced increasing sedentism, population growth, and organizational complexity. At the beginning of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely bound by collective burial rituals. But by the first millennium A.D., some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centers ruled by hereditary elites. Maize was now the primary food crop. Perhaps most importantly, the ancient animal-focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with one another. This volume synthesizes the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about while analyzing the period's archaeological record. In gathering the latest research available on the Woodland Period, the editors have included contributions from the full range of specialists working in the field, highlighted major themes, and directed readers to the proper primary sources. Of interest to archaeologists and anthropologists, both professional and amateur, this will be a valuable reference work essential to understanding the Woodland Period in the Southeast.

Large Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. First edition. A fine copy in a fine jacket. 2009 Large Hardcover. 96 pp. When Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) designed the Darwin D. Martin House complex (1903-1905), he filled the windows, doors, skylights, and laylights with nearly four hundred pieces of his signature art glass. The spectacular designs, abstractions of the architecture and surrounding environment, are among some of Wright's finest. These "light screens," as Wright called them, were fundamental to his principle of "bringing the outside in" by blurring the line between enclosed and open spaces. Despite the site-specific nature of Wright's art glass, nearly three-quarters of the pieces at the Martin House complex have been removed--many of them distributed to museums and private collections throughout the world. Today, due to the tremendous reconstruction efforts by the Martin House Restoration Corporation, the art glass designs are being restored to their original home. Only now, in their original context, is it possible to fully appreciate the importance of these "light screens" to Wright's overall composition for the Martin House complex.
