Includes 250 photographs plus supporting text and extensive captions on every aspect of the German Navy before and during World War II. military history. history of germany. third reich. nazi germany. naval history. marine history. ~ The German Navy, the Kriegsmarine, of the Third Reich fought a valiant campaign in World War II, both on the surface and under the waves. The Navy lost her fleet after World War I, so in the 1920s and 1930s, a new generation of vessels was constructed in Germany's shipyards, under the direction of the Commander~in~Chief of the German Navy, Admiral Erich Raeder, and, from 1933, Adolf Hitler, Chancellor of Germany. These vessels included pocket battleships, battlecruisers, destroyers and U~boats and, though Germany's surface fleet was small, her ships such as the Graf Spee, Bismark and Tirpitz, tied down a substantial amount of Allied naval resources when World War II broke out. However, it was the German Uboats that very nearly brought Britain to her knees through their 'wolf~pack' attacks on merchant convoys crossing the Atlantic. This tactic was the brainchild of Karl Donitz, who had been a U~boat commander in World War I, and who had devoted the intervening years to developing a method aimed at defeating the Allied convoy system. He very nearly succeeded. Kriegsmarine is a stunning pictorial record of the Third Reich's navy, from its rebirth after the Versailles Treaty to its war service between 1939 and 1945. With 250 black and white photographs, the majority of which have been recently unearthed in European archives and have never previously been published, the book tells the full dramatic story of the German Navy during World War II. Kriegsmarine covers each type of German naval vessel ~ commerce raiders, battleships, battlescruisers, cruisers, destroyers, torpedo boats, U~boats and S~boats. The photographs are complemented by a lively and informative text which relates the development history, deployment and tactics at sea of the various vessels involved. The book also includes accounts of the ships in action, such as the Battle of the River Plate which culminated in the hunt for the Bismark in May 1941, as well as the U~boat campaign in the Battle of the Atlantic, during which the German Navy was able to deploy over 200 operational submarines to attack the Allied convoys. The activities of the German Navy's multitude of small boats in the North Sea, Baltic Sea and English Channel are also explored.
