Nijmegen, De Gemeenschap, 2020. 125 pp. Ills (chiefly col.) Orig. hardcover (pictorial boards). Oblong 8vo.From the middle of the nineteenth century, governments, entrepreneurs and wealthy citizens throughout Europe were involved in housing construction. In the large cities, the majority of the population lived in miserable conditions, in one-room flats or slums. The first housing association in the Netherlands was founded in Amsterdam in 1852. After this, things moved quickly, many cities followed suit, including Nijmegen. There were gentlemen's associations that operated from above, and associations that were created on the initiative of employees. One such association was Bouwvereniging De Gemeenschap, officially founded on 13 August 1920 by employees of the Nederlandsche Spoor-en Tramwegen who lived in Nijmegen. - Text in Dutch.
