Vesuvius, and various festivals), works of art, etc.; decorative vignettes; maps and plans; engraved dedication. The "Voyage Pittoresque" was one of the most celebrated illustrated books of the eighteenth century. For the genesis of the project, see Antony Griffiths, "The Contract between Laborde and Saint-Non for the Voyage Pittoresque de Naples et de Sicile", Print Quarterly, Vol. 5, No. 4 (December 1988), pp. 408-414. The text for the four volumes in the series was published between 1781 and 1786; the plates were issued in livraisons from March 1778 onwards.JIoli Vingopoulou: Jean-Claude Richard, abbé de Saint-Non (1727-1791) was a French clergyman, engraver and painter. He was exiled from Paris for political reasons and lived from then onwards in Poitiers. EventuAlly, he made the choice to devote himself to his artistic interests (art, archaeology and music), and thus resigned from his public office as a judge. After 1759 Saint-Non lived in England for some time, and later moved to Italy (1759-1761). He traveled to Naples and Sicily with painter Fragonard and H. Robert. He released first his drawings of the monuments of Rome, which soon won over the public; thus, in 1777 he was able to publish his account and drawings of the "enchanting" journey to Magna Graecia. After ensuring financial support from sponsors, he prepared this five-volume work with enthusiasm, in spite of the difficulties which arose (1781-1786). The chronicle is comprised of Saint-Non's texts (a review of the history of Southern Italy and studies on Naples, Pompey, Herculanum and their neighbouring areas), and the corresponding plates.

The Grande Armée won the battle against the Imperial Russian Army with casualties in a ratio 2:3, but failed to gain a decisive victory. Napoleon fought against General Mikhail Kutuzov, whom the Emperor Alexander I of Russia had appointed to replace Barclay de Tolly on 29 August 1812 after the Battle of Smolensk." (Wikipedia) Napoleon went on to occupy Moscow where he remained for five weeks awaiting a surrender that would never come before deciding to retreat. Napoleon had begun his disastrous campaign with almost half a million men, but only about 10,000 soldiers made it out of Russia alive, the others lost to casualties, disease, starvation and severe weather conditions. The invasion is "one of the best studied military campaigns in history and is listed among the most lethal military operations in world history. It is characterized by the massive toll on human life.".…

"The Battle of Friedland (14 June 1807) was a major engagement of the Napoleonic Wars between the armies of the French Empire commanded by Napoleon I and the armies of the Russian Empire led by Count von Bennigsen. Napoleon and the French obtained a decisive victory that routed much of the Russian army, which retreated chaotically over the Alle River by the end of the fighting. The battlefield is located in modern-day Kaliningrad Oblast, near the town of Pravdinsk, RussiaNapoleon's overwhelming victoryeffectively ended the War of the Fourth Coalition, as Emperor Alexander I reluctantly entered peace negotiations with Napoleon. These discussions eventually culminated in the Treaties of Tilsit, by which Russia agreed to join the Continental System against Great Britain and by which Prussia lost almost half of its territories."
