L'auteur se donne pour tâche de démontrer que les lettres du Colonel Combe, Commandant la Légion étrangère, accusant le père d'Emile Zola, François Zola, de vol alors qu'il était officier à la Légion en 1831-32 (lettres dont s'est servi Ernest Judet, Directeur politique du "Petit Journal", pour attaquer Emile Zola en Juillet 1898, en pleine affaire Dreyfus) sont des faux, notamment en faisant remarquer qu'elles étaient signées "Combes" (selon Joseph Barou, qui donna une Conférence consacrée au Colonel en 1992, celui-ci signait souvent "Combes", même si l'orthographe des actes les plus anciens le concernant était "Combe"), et, également, en procédant à une analyse très fouillée de leur contenu, analyse reposant sur des recherches personnelles effectuées à Paris et en Algérie. Ce faisant, il donne d'intéressants détails sur les toutes premières années de la Légion étrangère. Il mène aussi enquête sur "l'affaire d'El-Ouffia", un massacre ordonné par le Duc de Rovigo auquel François Zola participa sur ordre, massacre suivi de condamnations à mort d'innocents pour lesquels le père d'Emile Zola avait sollicité la grâce. La partie consacrée de près ou de loin à la Légion étrangère occupe les pp 113 à 260. La première partie de l'ouvrage (pp 22-111) est relative à des faux (faits faux, pièces fausses, faux témoignages,etc.) qui ont entaché l'affaire Dreyfus, tandis que les pp 260-295 concernent l'action d'Emile Zola en faveur de Dreyfus. En août 1898, Zola avait déposé contre Judet une accusation d'usage de faux concernant ces prétendues lettres Combe(s), mais une ordonnance de non-lieu fut prononcée le 1er novembre de la même année. D'où le présent ouvrage. Fin janvier 1900, Emile Zola écrira trois articles sur son père dans "L'Aurore"; ce sera alors Judet qui le poursuivra pour usage de faux, mais Zola sera acquitté. François Zola, né en 1795, fils et petit-fils d'officiers de la République de Venise, avait servi dès 1812 dans l'artillerie à cheval du Prince Eugène de Beauharnais, Vice-Roi d'Italie, et fut Lieutenant à 23 ans. Par la suite, ingénieur civil, docteur en mathématiques, il travailla en Autriche à l'une des toutes premières lignes de chemin de fer construites en Europe. A 36 ans, il s'engagea en Algérie à la légion étrangère comme Capitaine d'habillement. En 1832, s'étant épris de l'épouse du fourrier du Corps, un sous-officier d'origine allemande, il aurait pris une somme importante dans le caisse du magasin d'habillement pour la remettre à sa maîtresse, afin de l'inciter à rester en Algérie alors que son mari rentrait en Europe. Mais elle s'embarqua pour Marseille. Il aurait tenté alors de se suicider, se serait constitué prisonnier et aurait remboursé la Légion. Bénéficiant de l'appui d'un de ses parents, le Général Comte de Loverdo, il aurait échappé au Conseil de Guerre, étant seulement contraint à la démission, à la grande colère du Colonel Combe(s). En 1833, il s'installa comme ingénieur civil à Marseille et conçut, grâce à l'appui politique de Thiers, le canal destiné à ravitailler en eau la ville d'Aix, alors dans une plaine désséchée, canal qui porta son nom. Il mourut en 1847 et Aix lui fit des funérailles solennelles. Emile Zola décéda quant à lui en 1902, près de 4 ans avant la réhabilitation de Dreyfus. Joint: Le texte de la conférence présentée à l'Assemblée de la Société Historique et Archéologique du Forez "La Diana" le 7 novembre 1992 par Joseph Barou et consacrée à la biographie du Colonel Combe, avec en annexe un arbre généalogique et les états de service du Colonel (12p A4).
