Das in viele Sprachen übersetzte Werk verschaffte seinem Urheber große wissenschaftliche Anerkennung und Popularität. Das naturwissenschaftliche Wirken Buffons basierte auf den Methoden von Beobachtung und Experiment. Er versuchte, die Entstehung der Lebewesen durch Urzeugung aus kleinsten Teilchen und ihre Entwicklung als Folge klimatischer Änderungen zu erklären, und setzte dem hierarchischen System Linnés die Idee einer evolutionären Stufenleiter entgegen. Seine Theorie stützte Buffon durch vergleichend-anatomische Studien. So erklärte er nutzlose Körperteile durch die Rückbildung ehemals nützlicher Teile eines Vorfahren. Buffon vertrat die Ansicht, dass alle Mitglieder einer Familie von Arten vom gleichen Vorfahren abstammen, von dem ausgehend sich einige vervollkommnet, andere jedoch zurückgebildet haben. Buffon sah zum Beispiel in einem Affen einen unvollständigen oder rückgebildeten Menschen. Carl von Linné benannte ihm zu Ehren die Gattung Bufonia der Pflanzenfamilie der Nelkengewächse (Caryophyllaceae). Der Mondkrater Buffon und der Asteroid (7420) Buffon wurden ebenfalls nach ihm benannt. Gleiches gilt für die Buffon-Inseln in der Antarktis. -- -- Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788) was a major French naturalist of the Age of Enlightenment. His main work is the "Histoire naturelle générale et particulière", which was published from 1749 until his death in 1788. The work, translated into many languages, brought great scholarly recognition and popularity to its author. Buffon's scientific work was based on the methods of observation and experiment. He tried to explain the origin of living beings through spontaneous generation from the smallest particles and their development as a result of climatic changes, and countered Linnaeus's hierarchical system with the idea of an evolutionary ladder. Buffon supported his theory with comparative anatomical studies. He explained useless body parts by the regression of formerly useful parts of an ancestor. Buffon held that all members of a family of species descended from the same ancestor, from which some perfected but others degenerated. For example, Buffon saw in a monkey an incomplete or degenerate human. Carl von Linné named the genus Bufonia of the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae) in his honor. The lunar crater Buffon and the asteroid (7420) Buffon were also named after him. Rare second edition, in the original French, of a series of treatises on pharmacology and related subjects. The present edition has several appendices, including letters in response to the first edition and replies by the author, the latest dated 24 September 1681. After the title-page (with an "Avertissement" on the back), the…author's 5-page dedication and a 36-page preface, the main text is in two parts. Part 1 contains a preliminary "discours" and three numbered subdivisions (also called parts), followed by Massard's French translation of Hippocrates, De prisca medicina. Part 2, with its own preface, XII chapters and IX articles, is followed by a "Traité des abus de la medecine ordinaire" (with its own preface and XIII chapters), an "Avis de Van-Helmont" (with its own preface), "Moyens de prevenir les abus de la medecine", and a royal approbation dated 7 June 1680. Finally come the appendices: a letter by De Blegny (3 August 1681), an extract from the Journal de Medecine of August 1681, Massard's response to De Blegny (20 August 1681), De Blegny's response to Massard (n.d.) and Massard's response (24 September 1681). The book closes with a Discours sur l'etablissement de l'Academie des nouvelles decouvertes de Medecine and a detailed table of contentsWith early owner's inscription, library stamps and bookplate. There is some underlining and a few reader's marks in the margins. The title-page is slightly worn, the foot margin of several leaves has been cut off with no loss of text, but the book remains in good condition. The book combines various sources of knowledge to demonstrate the eschatological significance of the contemporary international political situation, especially as it related to the plight of the Huguenots. Massard held that the correct interpretation of disasters, dreams, and prodigies would reveal Godâs plan; for him, all prophetic knowledge pointed to a providential certainty - the eventual defeat of the Papal anti-Christ and triumphant resurrection of Christ. In composing the work, Massard relied on the works of Michel Nostradamus, medieval Catholic visionaries, Central European prophets, and accounts of dreams he had personally collected. Size: 12mo.
