With a section at the end describing the people and the customs of the country, the presence of the church in Algeria, some tips on travelling there. The French presence in Algeria was new (apparently the name "Algérie" entered the French language in 1839) and the military conquest of it was still continuing. Suchet comments on these efforts and on the country and life that he observed. In orig. quarter calf with marbled boards and endpapers, calf spine label, gilt and blind stamped spine; covers worn and scuffed, back cover has water damage with some of outer paper covering the rear board flaked off, some light water staining on final endsheets and half-title sheet, otherwise text is mostly clean except for some foxing. Owner's name on half-title page. Mostly otherwise in good condition.
