Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an adeptly composed 16th-century theological defense of the Lutheran doctrine of the Eucharist, written by the revered German theologian and reformer Jacob Andreae. The text focuses on the intense theological controversy surrounding the nature of the sacrament of Holy Comm…union that fiercely divided the Protestant Reformation movement at its peak. The author engages in a rigorously detailed disputation with the prominent Swiss Reformer Johannes Brenz, one of the most influential proponents of the opposing Reformed Eucharistic theology popularized by figures such as Andreas Karlstadt, Caspar Schwenckfeld, and Huldrych Zwingli. The author argues that Brenz has dangerously misrepresented the Lutheran position in his recent publication, and endeavors to meticulously correct his misleading account. Weaving together deep theological erudition and unwavering commitment to the Lutheran tradition, Andreae articulates a thoroughgoing critique of Brenz's Eucharistic doctrine. He contends that Brenz fundamentally misunderstands the Lutheran doctrine of the real presence of Christ in the sacrament, and that the symbolic interpretation of the elements favored by Brenz and his fellow Reformed theologians distorts the plain sense of Scripture and the intent of Christ in instituting the sacrament. Andreae argues for a more literal interpretation of Christ's words of institution, emphasizing the importance of the physical elements of bread and wine as means by which the communicant receives the true body and blood of Christ. The author maintains that the Lutheran doctrine of the Eucharist, when rightly understood, is in accordance with the teachings of the early Church Fathers and the clear testimony of Scripture, and that it alone safeguards the integrity and efficacy of the sacrament as a means of grace. Andreae's work offers a significant contribution to the ongoing theological debate over the nature of the Eucharist, and provides valuable insights into the development of Lutheran Eucharistic theology in the 16th century. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
