But it would be misleading to say that the novel is about Quakers. It's about the psychology and sociology of religion and spirituality in general. The breadth and profundity of the author's thematic probing is balanced by his attention to character and all the craggy particularities necessary to create convincing three-dimensional portraits. Given the nature of Quakerism (officially, The Society of Friends), that is to say, its almost obsessive regard for the working of the Holy Spirit in each individual without disregard for the outward aspects of religion, the connection between the author's two concerns -- theme and character -- is almost seamless. The theme of a "Quaker" novel is bound to be one and the same as a group of character portraits. The author's tone is neither sentimental, melodramatic, satirical, nor sensational. That's not to say the novel does not deliver strong sensations. Water-witching, touch-healing, speaking in tongues, mind-reading via spirits all come into play. You won't want to miss the scene when Enoch's wife throws her sister's baby down the well! The Quaker tradition is rich with -- indeed dependent on -- "their insistence on the fact of immediate communion between God and man" (ibid, vol. 11, p. 225), such communions often being preceded or accompanied by grotesque physical agitations. In addition to 21 short lyric poems, this booklet includes 14-page dystopian romance in the form of dramatic poem in blank verse, "Atlantis: A Play Among the Gods," in which Neptune asks Jupiter to help him create an idyllic island on which the sea-god will place human and nymphs disguised as humans. It's a bit unclear whether Neptune's intention should be regard as a sociology experiment, an earnest effort at social engineering, or the getting up of an entertainment for himself and the gods, or some mix of all three. In pitching the idea to Jupiter, Neptune promises "there shall be a spectacle / Of convulsed nature at the cataclysm." The cool cynicism of this, approved by Jupiter in his response, finds a dissonance in Neptune's concluding remarks. His human hero has committed suicide after the nymph he loves fails to make him leave the doomed island. Neptune seems shocked by this, though the gods have a good laugh as the island vanishes with the usual volcanic eruption and sinking beneath the waves. "All, all is mystery, and all is fate, / And all is woe." This dramatic poem appears to be a truncated version of Alisto and Acne (Brentanto's Literary Emporium, 1881), a very rare booklet with no holdings listed in WorldCat. Perhaps that earlier longer work avoided some of the muddle apparent in the present version, which is clearly modeled on Shakespearean models but borrows confusingly from The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. One might, with some glibness, dub it A Midsummer Night's Nightmare. The author, James Alexander Wickersham, born in Kansas c. 1850, worked as a teacher of languages at Rose Polytechnic Institute in Terre Haute, Indiana. His one published novel, Enoch Willoughby (Scribner's, 1900), is a notably powerful and imaginative study of the intrusion of spiritualism into a Quaker community. Poetry was not his strong suit, but it's regrettable he didn't write more fiction. …
