This is an antique copy of "LIFE IN DANBURY (Connecticut) - Being a Brief but Comprehensive Record of the Doings of a Remarkable People, and Chronicled in a Most Remarkable Manner" by James M. Bailey (the "Danbury News Man"). 1873 1st edition, 10th thousand (stated); Shepard and Gill; Boston. The book features a frontispiece portrait of Bailey surrounded by "his friends," and other full-page illustrations. The book is a collection of humorous sketches and short stories that depict daily life, domestic situations, and the people of Danbury, CT, in a funny and relatable manner. It compiles articles Bailey originally wrote for "The Danbury News," where he worked as a journalist. Bailey gained fame for his knack for capturing glimpses of daily life in the town. The sketches offer a witty look into the social and domestic history of the "remarkable people" of Danbury. The book is considered an early example of American slapstick comedy in print. Condition: Tiny cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Light soiling to the covers and spine; the front cover has a tiny, dark stain at the top edge. Small cloth tear at the bottom-right corner of the front cover. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. The pages have occasional small stains, though a bit larger stains on pages 8-11. Occasional mild foxing to the pages here and there. A tiny dimple/impression appears at the bottom half of the pages from the front pastedown to about page 50 - in most instances, this dimple is shallow but in a few cases the page has been penetrated resulting in a tiny hole. Light foxing to the tissue guard over the frontispiece. Overall the book is in Good- condition.
