Set against the backdrop of Nicaragua's decade-long civil war, the book paints a vivid picture of Walker's audacious quest to establish himself as the supreme power of the strife-torn republic. Through the eyes of James Carson Jamison, an American officer serving under Walker, the book offers a firsthand account of the military tactics, political intrigues, and personal dramas that unfolded during this tumultuous period. Jamison's detailed observations provide insights into the complexities of Nicaragua's political landscape and the personal motivations that drove Walker and his fellow filibusters. The book's exploration of the themes of loyalty, ambition, and the consequences of war offers a nuanced understanding of this fascinating chapter in Central American history and its enduring legacy. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Octavo. [1], 181 pages, [1]. Frontispiece photograph of the author. A couple of illustrations in the book. Blue cloth hardcover with gilt title on the front cover and spine. Light soil to the cloth. Light edge wear to the cloth extremities. Previous owner illustrated bookplate on the front paste down. A small handful of articles related to Walker including an article in 1988 about Actor Ed Harris portraying Walker in a film are laid inside the book. From wikipedia: William Walker (May 8, 1824 September 12, 1860) was an American physician, lawyer, journalist, and mercenary who organized several private military expeditions into Mexico and Central America with the intention of occupying the local nations and establishing slave-hold colonies, an enterprise then known as "filibustering". Walker usurped the presidency of Nicaragua in July 1856 and ruled until May 1, 1857,[1] when he was forced out[2] of the presidency and the country by a coalition of Central American armies. He returned in an attempt to re-establish his control of the region and was captured and executed by the government of Honduras in 1860.
