Author James Mahar's mother was forty-year-old Mary Jean (Jackson) Hinch at the time of the Halifax Explosion (1917). Her husband and all ten of their children were killed and it was a small miracle that she survived. His Aunt Ada lost her husband Charlie and five children. The author grew up in the shadow of the explosion and although his mother never spoke of it, she religiously marked its anniversary and his Aunt Ada talked on nothing else. Too Many to Mourn tells the tragic story of the Halifax Explosion through the lives and deaths of the Jackson family. It is a meticulous reconstruction of the personal events of their lives in the face of this horrendous disaster.
