Contact seller5-star sellerHartford: John C. Wells, 1842. First edition. Original brown cloth, gilt lettered, decorated in blind, 201 pages, with a lengthy Errata list at the end. Old penciled corrections for every error on the list. Murdock (1776-1856) had been a professor at the Andover Theological Seminary until his retirement in 1829. This book was "E…ssentially a genealogy of Idealist philosophy" from Kant through Fichte, Schelling, Jacobi, and Hegel - it was "remarkable how thoroughly and lucidly it introduces so potentially abstruse a topic." In his chapter on "American Transcendentalism" he credited "Victor Cousin, not Coleridge, Thomas Carlyle, or any of the Germans directly as the main inspiration of the early American transcendentalists. (Philip Gura, American Transcendentalism, a History, 2007). A contemporary inscription at the top of the front free endpaper: "Presented to the M.L.A. Feb. 4th", partially obscured by the bookplate of the "Manhattan Literary Association", which is partially obscured by the bookplate of the Yarmouth Public Library. A bit of chipping to spine ends; insect damage of 1 1/2 inches to a rear joint; light foxing, except heavier on both pastedowns; A Very Good copy.

Murdock (1776-1856) had… been a professor at the Andover Theological Seminary until his retirement in 1829. This book was "Essentially a genealogy of Idealist philosophy" from Kant through Fichte, Schelling, Jacobi, and Hegel - it was "remarkable how thoroughly and lucidly it introduces so potentially abstruse a topic." In his chapter on "American Transcendentalism" he credited "Victor Cousin, not Coleridge, Thomas Carlyle, or any of the Germans directly as the main inspiration of the early American transcendentalists. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair. Original dark brown cloth with gilt spine titles and blind-stamped borders. 515pp. First copyrighted in 1851. Engraved frontispiece of Murdock. In the Preface the translator says that someone else (J. W. Etheridge) came out with a translation when he was working on this one, but the former's "plan and… aims . . . were found to be so diverse from (Murdock's) that the translator (Murdock) had no hesitation in going forward with his work." Murdock's translation includes the Catholic epistles and Revelation that is mentioned as sometimes not in Syriac New Testaments. The text of Murdock's translation is formatted with the intention of placing key / important Syriac words in the margins on each page. Top of spine frayed with a bit of cloth missing. Board corners exposed. Else a very good, sound copy. Fos on ffep of F. N. Haskell / Andover Theol. Sem. / A. D. 1853. Very, very scarce, especially in this reasonable condition.
