One of the longest of such texts, these tablets hold instructions for religious ceremonies performed by a brotherhood of priests in the town of Iguvium. The author meticulously examines the tablets' distinctive alphabets, variant forms, pronunciations, and grammar, offering a comprehensive analysis of the Umbrian language. By comparing the tablets to historical events and other sources, the author reveals the tablets' significance as not only religious texts, but also historical documents reflecting the social and cultural landscape of ancient Umbria. Through its detailed linguistic analysis and historical contextualization, this book sheds light on the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of pre-Roman Italy, contributing to a deeper understanding of the diverse tapestry of languages and traditions that existed before Rome's rise to power. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: vg. First edition. Quarto (9 3/4 x 7"). xvi, 333, [1]pp (Text), [4] leaves (Plates). Original olive cloth with gold lettering to spine. This work is a remarkable monograph on the Iguvine Tablets, also known as the Eugubian Tablets or Eugubine Tables, a series of seven bronze tablets from ancient Iguvium (modern Gubbio), Italy. "The earliest tablets, written in the native Umbrian alphabet, were probably produced in the 3rd century BC, and the latest, written in the Latin alphabet, from the 1st century BC. The tablets contain religious inscriptions that memorialize the acts and rites of the Atiedian Brethren, a group of 12 priests of Jupiter with important municipal functions at Iguvium. The religious structure present in the tablets resembles that of the early stage of Roman religion, reflecting the Roman archaic triad and the group of gods more strictly related to Jupiter. Discovered in a farmer's field in the year 1444, they are currently housed in the Civic Museum of the Palazzo dei Consoli in Gubbio. The tablets are written in the Umbrian language, and are by far the longest and most important document of any of the Osco-Umbrian group of languages, which are closely related to Latin. The tablets shed light on the grammar of this ancient dead language, and also on the religious practices of the ancient peoples of Italy, including the archaic religion of the Romans. Parts of tablets VI and VII appear to be written in an accentual metre, similar to the Saturnian metre that is encountered in the earliest Latin poetry." (From Wikipedia). Ex-library copy, with sticker at upper front joint and tail of spine; bookplate on inside of front cover, and stamp at top and bottom paper edges. Binding and interior in very good condition.
