Hard Cover. First edition, stated. 123 pgs., 8vo. In 1948 Jeffers submitted a collection called "The Double Axe and Other Poems" to Random House, whereupon Bennett Cerf and the poet's own editor objected to some of the poems, on political grounds. Jeffers was expressing a view, in the aftermath of the war, that man's inhumanity is part of his fundamental make-up, and he used several well-known contemporary figures toexpress that view. Ten poems were deleted and others were changed. These poems, in original text and with revisions noted, are presented here, with contextual discussion by Dr. Shebl, who contends the poet was consistently misunderstood. Even so, Jeffers survives as a major voice in modern poetry, and this book allows him to be heard, without editorial censoring. Brown cloth binding, one corner bumped, and an only-fair jacket, with fold lines and small losses at the periphery -- yet the Ansel Adams photo of the poet near Tor House, Carmel, California shows a confident writer, confronting nature and his detractors with the same, wide stance of firm resolution. Very good condition in worn (fair) dust jacket.
