Publisher's review slip laid in, stamped with publication date 10 11 54 and price $4.00, with a handwritten notation in ink along left edge. Pictorial dust jacket reproduces the Post-Dispatch front page of July 22, 1936 ("Wholesale Frauds Found in Primary Registration in City"), overprinted with title, author and publisher in blue script lettering. Several nicks and short tears (3/4 inch or less), small chip at head of rear panel, creasing along edges, moderate overall soiling and toning. Front flap price-clipped at top corner, with the price also stamped "$4.00" at head of flap. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. Biography of Oliver Kirby Bovard (1872-1945), managing editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch from 1908 to 1938, regarded in the trade as "the greatest managing editor" and "the last of Joseph Pulitzer's great editors." Markham, then Associate Professor of Journalism at Pennsylvania State University, drew on the Pulitzer Papers at the Library of Congress and Columbia University, Bovard family papers and interviews with former staff. The book follows Bovard from cub reporter to managing editor, his working relationship with Joseph Pulitzer II, and the paper's crusades, including Teapot Dome. The front page on the jacket is from the paper's 1936 campaign exposing fraudulent voter registration in St. Louis, which won the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Plates include Bovard at his desk, the reporters he trained (Raymond P. Brandt, Charles G. Ross, Marquis Childs and Paul Y. Anderson), and St. Louis reporters at the 1898 Belleville street fair.
