He travelled to Oregon with Applegate's first wagon train in 1843. He had also been, from 1857-1859, Superintendent of Indian Affairs. He was ele…cted U. S. Senator from Oregon in 1860, as a Douglas Democrat. [ Not in Mintz]. Includes an 8-page biography of Nesmith.
