Hard Back. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Assumed First Edtion. 54 Pages. No marks or stamps. Faultless interior. Dust jacket is a bit tattered around the edges but complete. Dust jacket price $2.00 is unclipped. All sorts of books are written about the renewal of the church and the ministry of the laity. Thi…s book will be different from any thus far published. The subject church renewal is not new. The style, similar to hill-billy is not new. What is new is the marriage of the two. The result is off-beat humor with a barb. It tells the awful truth about the poverty of faith from which so many Christians suffer. It describes this poverty in various ways: Church membership has become a substitute for faith. A good many church folks believe all sorts of things, most of which are pretty far from what Christianity means. What good is it if we say how sorry we feel for the starving or hungry if we forget about them as soon as we leave the sanctuary and begin wondering what's for dinner instead? It suggests counter-measures, too, such as: The church ought to get into the thick of things where people live, and if that causes the people of the church to get their heads bloody, well, that's what happened to the Founder of the Church, too.The essential purpose of the book is to cause the reader to think again about theology, the Bible, and the work of the church. It doesn't intend to tell him what to believe, but it does tell him some of the things that are worth thinking about. It should penetrate deep into the hearts and souls and gizzards and whatever else is important in the makeup of laymen, and it might even touch a clergyman here and there, too. Humorous illustrations by Johanna Sperl. Sperl, Johanna (illustrator).

Contact seller5-star sellerTrade Paperback. Condition: Fine. Second Printing. 193 Pages. A tight, square book, with interior text pages bright, and white. Previous owner's name on the half-title page. Ralph J. Hall, a native of the West Texas cattle country, dropped out of school because of eye trouble. Even though he had not attended college or seminary,… he was commissioned a Sunday School missionary by the Presbytery of Boulder. Then, in 1916, after private instruction and determined study, he was ordained to the gospel ministry. In 1941, the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred on him by the Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania. He has been the subject of many write-ups in church publications and also in Time and The Saturday Evening Post. Three motion pictures have been made about his missionary work: The Vanishing Frontier) a silent picture made in 1929; Cowboy's Hitching Post, filmed in color in the late forties with narration added; Altars of God, photo- graphed in color and also with dialog in 1955. The author died in 1973.
