8vo (150 x 212 mm). 141 ff. Arabic manuscript on paper. Black nasta'liq script ruled in gilt for the first 20 folios, then ruled in red. Full leather with both covers decorated with paste-down floral patterned paper. A popular commentary by Nur ad-Din 'Abd ar-Rahman Jami (1414-92 CE) on the grammarian Ibn al-Hajib's "Kafiyah", a standard work on the grammar and syntax of the Arabic language. Also known simply as "Mulla Jami", the author of this commentary was a prominent Persian Sunni poet. In his youth his family moved to Herat, where his studies at Nizamiyyah University included philosophy, mathematics, the natural sciences, literature, and the Arabic language. Well-educated and well-travelled, Jami studied and taught in Samarkand, held an important position in the Timurid court, and befriended and mentored the Turkish poet Alisher Navoi, considered the greatest representative of Chagatai literature. Multilingual and multitalented, he was certainly well-placed to produce a commentary of the Kafiyah. This particular manuscript was completed by the scribe Mustafa Ankaravi. - Light exterior wear, a few instances of soiling. Lacks a fore-edge flap, retaining only the cloth hinge. Otherwise in good condition.
