Drei Jahre lang konnte sich Srebrenica der Eroberung ganz Ostbosnien durch serbische Milizen widersetzen. Als UN-Schutzzone wurde sie zur Fluchtburg Zehntausender Muslime. Im Juli 1995 wurde die immer wieder unter Beschuß genommene Stadt schließlich von den Serben erobert.
