Lo cierto es que cojo datos de muchas personas que han sufrido los horrores de la guerra y el picor de sus llamas, y que han probado su amargo sabor. Algunos personajes son reales, personas que me contaron sus historias; otras son personas cercanas a quienes conozco en la realidad, como Leila y su marido, el cirujano Ferhad (los nombres son, evidentemente, ficticios), en esta novela. Los conozco bien y me dolió mucho el destino de su pequeña familia, pues Leila sigue siendo incapaz de articular palabra a día de hoy y vive refugiada con tres hijos en Estambul. Otros personajes son producto de mi imaginación, a fin de completar la escena y contar la amarga realidad. Ma quanto sollievo possono dare le semplici parole del poeta che si guarda intorno (e dentro) smarrito e cerca 'compagni al duolo', uomini desiderosi come lui di pace e fratellanza. La lezione della poesia non può che essere quel che è: parola che comunica e si comunica, messaggio che cerca e trova, esperienza che si fa conoscenza partecipata. Anche gli oggetti parlano, si confessano nella loro fragilità di impotenza, che diventa paradossalmente vita nuova offerta a chi guardandoli sappia coglierne il riflesso, l'ombra di ciò che sono o almeno furono: un orologio, una bicicletta, una porta, una finestra, un tetto, elementi di un paesaggio/ambiente che vivono ormai soltanto in queste parole, conservate per parlare di un tempo in cui vivevano davvero poiché erano parte della vita umana di chi li viveva e ne aveva parte.
