Original, un-clipped illustrated dust wrapper has a vintage Easter Seal over price on dj frt flap. Jacket has small chips at frt tips and spine ends, now in new mylar and displays well. A novel of Elizabeth, Empress of Austria (Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie; 24 December 1837 - 10 September 1898), nicknamed Sisi or Sissi. She was an accomplished horsewoman and hunted the red fox in the shires of England in this fictional/partly factual story. The author's exploration of the places where the beautiful Elizabeth is known to have stayed during her visits to England has culminated in a lively portrait of her. The Empress was immortalized in a poem which named her "The Queen of the Chase". Miss Laing as also surrounded her with people whom she might well have met when hunting - the dainty little orphaned Garance Gray-Lowe; the pretty, naughty Baroness Ilona; handsome yeoman farmer Robert Jeffery, and the humorously drawn Court physician. All these characters, however, are overshadowed by the Empress herself, who was to meet such tragedy later in life. [Elisabeth was born into the Bavarian House of Wittelsbach but enjoyed an informal upbringing before marrying her first cousin, Emperor Franz Joseph I, at 16. The marriage thrust her into the much more formal Habsburg court life, for which she was unprepared and which she found suffocating. She was also queen of Hungary (crowned June 8, 1867) after the Austro-Hungarian Ausgleich, or Compromise. She was assassinated on September 10, 1898, at age 60, when she was fatally stabbed in the heart by an Italian anarchist named Luigi Lucheni while traveling in Geneva].
