Very good condition. Afrikaans text with English summary. The newspaper, De Volksstem (later De Volkstem then Die Volkstem), was first published in Pretoria in 1873 under the editorship of Jan F. Cilliers. In 1895 De Volksstem became the first daily newspaper in South Africa. Subsequent editors included Dr F.V. Engelenburg, Gustav Preller and N. Levi. In addition to the newspaper, Cilliers also engaged in commercial printing, and Wallachs' Printers & Publishing Company Limited was formed in 1905. An important contribution towards the history of the Afrikaans language and of Pretoria.

It is now called Oliver Tambo House and is the official residence of the Deputy President. The dustjacket is in a poor state. It has much wear and tear. The dj front cover has an open tear at the bottom left corner and the foot of the spine. The front and back of the dj are shelving and handling marked. There is wear and tear to the top edge in particular and at the corners. The green cover is strong and firm. There are shallow shelving depressions on the corners. The frontis and end papers have been thinned and marked during storage. The contents, however, are bright, firm, glossy, clean and clear. fk.
