Un gruppo di pescatori opera da una zattera utilizzando una lanterna per attirare i pesci verso la superficie, dove vengono catturati con fiocine e altri strumenti. Sulla riva alcuni spettatori, tra cui una dama e un fanciullo, assistono all'attività , trasformando la scena in una rappresentazione al tempo stesso documentaria e di genere. L'incisione illustra una tecnica di pesca tradizionale già nota in età rinascimentale, in cui la luce artificiale sfrutta il naturale comportamento dei pesci, attratti dalla luminosità nelle ore notturne.
