Un gruppo di pescatori opera da una zattera utilizzando una lanterna per attirare i pesci verso la superficie, dove vengono catturati con fiocine e altri strumenti. Sulla riva alcuni spettatori, tra cui una dama e un fanciullo, assistono all'attività , trasformando la scena in una rappresentazione al tempo stesso documentaria e di genere. L'incisione illustra una tecnica di pesca tradizionale già nota in età rinascimentale, in cui la luce artificiale sfrutta il naturale comportamento dei pesci, attratti dalla luminosità nelle ore notturne. La composizione unisce osservazione della natura e gusto enciclopedico rinascimentale: in primo piano gli uccelli combattono i rettili mentre due cacciatori assistono alla scena, sullo sfondo di un paesaggio attraversato da un ponte e punteggiato da edifici. In ottimo stato complessivo, impressione nitida. La tavola, raffigura una scena di mercato successiva alla cattura delle colombe (palumbes): u…n venditore espone gli uccelli vivi in una cesta mentre una giovane donna ne osserva un esemplare, circondata da altri acquirenti. Sullo sfondo si distinguono reti tese tra gli alberi e cacciatori intenti alla cattura dei volatili, creando un efficace collegamento tra l'attività venatoria e la successiva commercializzazione della selvaggina. Il distico latino inciso al margine inferiore (Retibus aut laqueis capitur sic saepe Palumbes, Quae mortem propriae prolis amore subit) richiama la tradizionale credenza secondo cui le colombe, spinte dall'amore per la prole, finiscono per cadere nelle reti predisposte dai cacciatori. La tavola raffigura la tradizionale caccia autunnale alle quaglie migratrici (Coturnix cotur…nix), praticata mediante grandi reti, gabbie con richiami vivi e il caratteristico fischietto imitante il verso dell'animale. In primo piano due cacciatori preparano i richiami e le gabbie, mentre sullo sfondo altri uomini dispongono e sorvegliano le reti tese nei campi durante il passo migratorio. Il distico latino al margine inferiore recita: âSic Autumnali capitur peregrina Coturnix / Tempore, et excipiulis effundit sibila linguisâ, descrivendo la cattura delle quaglie nel periodo autunnale mediante richiami sonori. Six rare engravings, in exceptional contemporary hand colour with lavish use of gold - very probably prepared for the Medici circle, where Stradanus served as the court artist. - This is the first edition of a suite of twenty-one engravings (one engraved tit…le and twenty numbered prints) designed by the Flemish painter Jan van der Straet, known as Stradanus. The didactic purpose of each engraving is reminiscent of a 15th century Biblia Pauperum, in that the text at the top is the prefiguration from the Old Testament, while that at the bottom is from the Gospels. - Born in Bruges in 1523, Stradanus trained in his father's shop, then in Antwerp with Pieter Aertsen. By 1545, he had joined the Antwerp painters' guild of Saint Luke. He moved to Florence in 1550, where he spent most of his prolific career, in the service of the Medici dukes and Giorgio Vasari. His designs, engraved by such Flemish masters as Theodore Galle, Jan Collaert, and Joannes Wierix, gained immense popularity throughout Europe, and his work is widely regarded as the peak of Renaissance engraving. - Complete sets of Stradanus's "Passio" are rare, and even singular examples of any of the engravings are seldom encountered. Worldcat records only three copies. - Closely trimmed, and originally mounted on poor quality stiff gold card for framing; backing boards removed by Celia Withycombe ACR ICON, Senior Conservator, Oxford Conservation Consortium, April-June 2017.1 Each engraving appears to be in a proof state, in advance of signing by the artist and engraver. - PBA Galleries, Sale 601, 17 November 2016, lot 37.
