Red cloth hardcover retaining the original photographic dust jacket depicting a mare and foal. Illustrated with black-and-white photographic plates and containing stories centred around animals, farming and the natural world. Of particular interest is an original presentation label to the front pastedown from the Western Kent Sunday School Union Scholars' Examination, March 1945, Lower Junior Division, awarding the book as a prize to John Edwards. The inscription provides useful provenance and establishes that this copy was in circulation by 1945. Condition: Good overall for its age. Red cloth boards show general shelf and edge wear. Page block is age-toned with foxing/discolouration to the page edges, endpapers and scattered internally. Original prize label remains present. Binding is holding and text and photographic plates remain readable and presentable. The original dust jacket is in Fair condition, with substantial rubbing and handling wear, creasing, staining/marking, tears, chips and losses at the edges, corners and particularly around the head and foot of the spine.
